The Resistance Will Continue

The Resistance Will Continue

Here's Bush's olive branch to Kerry voters:

"I will need your support and I will work to earn it," the president said in an appeal to the 55 million Americans who voted for his Democratic rival. "We are entering a season of hope," he said.

As he's done nothing to earn our support for the last four years, when he would presumably need it for reelection, is it reasonable to believe that he will actually do anything to earn it now? Do any of you believe he will now, after four years of being the most divisive President in my lifetime (a lifetime that includes Presidents Johnson and Nixon), begin to try to make good on his promise of being "a uniter, not a divider?"

I for one believe that he's just warming up in his assault on our freedoms and the American experiment in liberal government and it's time for us to take a few days and a few drinks to work through this loss, and come back resolved to fight him on all fronts. Voting for President is something we do once every four years. The opportunities to exercise our democratic rights come along daily. We've lost an election. It was significant, but it's not everything. Let's give Bush and the Republicans four years of hell.

I guess you could say I'm rejecting Bush's peace gesture.

Comment I agree with the Pendulum swing theory, Generik but I'm not sure we're at the far right limit yet. One thing that gives me hope, though, is that the next mid-term elections could very well mirror the Contract on America mid-term elections from the 90s. This mess in Iraq isn't going to get any better and maybe next we'll have this Administration doing their inept thing in Iran or Syria. The thing to remember is that while four years seems like an eternity, two years is a very short time away. We have to mobilize and we have to work our asses off. It's kind of hard living here in the Bay Area because we don't have such immediate access to the people we need to reach. But I think we're all creative people here and we need to come up with some workable solutions quickly. Two years could very well be the time the Pendulum starts swinging back the other way. Let's see if we can give it a little help!

Comment You guys are a lot more optimistic than I've been the last two days. All I wanted to know is whether you're supposed to swallow the razor blades and Drano *before* the iodine or afterwards. But I give you credit for not giving up. It's that spirit that keeps me from completely surrendering. You're right, too, that we need to start organizing now and not let up. It took the wingers years to get their machine in place. It's there in full force now, and they control everything. That means they are going to have to take responsibility for their fuck-ups at some point -- they can't keep blaming Clinton after this election. What we need to do now is open a few eyes as to how badly people are getting screwed by the folks they voted for, hoping they'd keep them safe. Pendulums swing in both directions, and this one has swung about as far to the right as it can. It's going to be time for a swing back to the left in a few short years.

Comment I've been so encouraged today by the number of people who haven't been completely disheartened by this loss. There are a lot of people who are ready to continue the fight. What we have to do is figure out how best to carry on. Just as important as focusing on winning the White House in four years is taking back some House and Senate seats in two years and trying to minimize the damage Bush can do with his judicial appointments. That last one is what's going to keep me up at night. He'll likely be able to pack the Supreme Court over the next four years, and we'll be dealing with the consequences for decades. We do have a lot of good people, though, and we can come together to do what we have to, at first to defeat the right and eventually to replace them.

Comment I know a lot of people are right now thinking that four years seems like an interminably long time and that it's way too early to start doing anything meaningful for the next Presidential election. To be honest, I think it's precisely the opposite. The Republicans have made such gains in the cultural wars that we'll be lucky if four years is ENOUGH time! The Right has been building their infrastructure for years and years and years. We've got a hell of a lot to do. I'm just glad we have so many good people on our side.
